I wonder why high schools decided that big horns were no longer desirable? At one point it seemed that every school had a few Conn 2XJ's. If the demand were still there I would think that Conn/UMI would have continued to make them.

Now the majority of 6/4 sized horns are CC tubas intended for large symphony use. I'm sure that part of that is that the markup can be higher on CC tubas than on BBb's. It's just the difference between the pro market and the amateur/school market. BBb tubas are just not used by pros in the US. (OK, there are exceptions, but they are rare) I can't believe that the production cost of a Conn 56J is enough higher than on a King 2341 to account for the difference in price. If there were enough demand for 6/4 BBb tubas in the US I'm sure that more would be made.
