My wife is a speech pathologist. She would tell you that you are indeed doing damage to your vocal chords if you are producing low pitch sound in a manner contrary to the way you would normally talk or sing.

In my case, I can hit the D in question through most of the day and in the proper voice production. When it gets later in the day, the vocal chords tend to tighten up, and then production at that range gets more difficult. When I try to stress my throat into getting that range, I stress the chords, and that is bad, according to her.

Thouugh this action over time, I am told that I would get nodules on the chords, and may get the low notes, but loose the next 2 octaves in range.

BTW, I can sometimes get down to BBb if I have a head cold, and yell alot the night before.
