Jon,
One thing I have found which helps my practice is through the use of "spontaneous" tasks. One such task for me is recording. When I work on excerpts, etudes, solos, anything really, I turn on my mini-disc. After recording some stuff, I go back and listen. At that point I will notate in my music what I don't like, and what i would like to improve. Then I have sort of given myself feedback. It lets me practice teaching myself too.
Also, spend some time on sight reading. This is a challenge for yourself, and lets you play something out of the ordinary. If it is new material, I find that during a first read-through I can't be bored with it!
Finally, plan your practice sessions to have specific goals, and focus on more frequent, shorter, time spans. This helps me when I slip into my ADD mode. Work in some non-tuba related practice, i.e. breathing exercises, etc., and that might add some variety to your routine as well.
Good luck!
