I can comment on UGA as whole and the city of Athens since I went there recently and got my PhD in chemistry in 1998. Athens is a great place to live...the city isn't too big but it has many cultural events (art shows, theater productions, music concerts of all kinds) like most big cities do. If I could have gotten a job in Athens, I would be there now! The quality of life is excellent. They have excellent local restaurants and a neat alternative bar scene...since Athens is the home of REM and the B-52s, it has been reported than many impromptu concerts have been performed by these artists making surprise appearances.
The music facilities there are state of the art and first rate. Since I was never a music major I can NOT comment on the teaching or curriculum. I do know that UGA has an excellent overall reputation.
