Well, frankly, I have the opportunity to play with people who can't count, can't read music, and have no chops all the time. My level of patience is inversely proportional to the pay. Fortunately, for the paying gigs, no patience is needed, as everyone is a competent musician. Unfortunately, volunteer organizations (as for a church) require the patience of JOB.

There have been a few instances in our muni band where the tuba player (usually a high schooler) can't count. Fortunately, everyone in the section takes a turn counseling the out-lier, making avuncular suggestions such as, "you know, I trouble with this part two years ago until I practiced with a metronome......"

In the absence of such a support group, I agree with a previous poster: sometimes you just have to suck it up, sit about two chairs away, and play your best.
