I'm going to be doing this work in May with a massed ensemble here at Virginia Tech. I searched around and finally found the Britten recording with the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. I HIGHLY recommend this recording to not only here the piece as the composer intended, but there is also about 45 minutes worth of rehearsals at the end of disc 2 that has Britten working with the orchestra, the choir and the soloists....including a spot where they try an impromptu tuba mute.
