I have done it on three different instruments, replacing the entire valve cluster, including the valve tubing and leadpipe. The tapered section of tubing coming out of the valve section also must be replaced, to avoid any step down in bore. In each case the instrument played differently after the operation, but when I used new valve sections the results were definite improvements. You can always save the pieces and put the old plumbing back if you don't like it, and many of us are always in the market for a nearly new valve section.
