Actually, I would say sort of the opposite...that one should play the smallest mouthpiece that they can STAND. The upper register will be much easier; more and more of an issue with today's solo literature. The "...that they can stand" part comes in with the low register. It's always harder to go smaller with mouthpieces at first. For me, a very large euphonium mouthpiece such as a Bach 1 1/2G is exactly what was stated by John S. above...fine for 90% of the literature, but if you have to hang around high Bb for awhile, it can get both squeally and painful! The SM2 had kind of a dull sound for my taste, and the smaller sizes feel too small to me. I maintain that a combination of wide rim and shallower cup is a a good combination. BTW, weren't you asking about smaller mouthpieces in a previous thread? :)
