My students pick up CC tuba fingerings in about a week or so. I could care less how or why, just as long as they get it done. Their band directors could care less what horn they play in thier band,because its just a high school band, their egos arent that big, and my students are competent musicians. It only takes a short amount of time to switch, no big deal.
I will assume you are a good tuba player. PLay your new tuba whenever you want. Big bad band director can kick you out of class if he likes. If he likes you though, he should let you play it. I love busytin on morons.
