I think that most people would prefer the protection of a case, but the practicality of it is just not realistic, for most people. Just about everybody I know who has to transport their horn on a daily basis does so in a gig bag - unless they are playing the small Yamaha F tuba, in which case it's such a small horn that the molded hard case is very condusive for easy transport.
I trust my horns in gig bags, as long as I am the one handling them. If anyone else is going to be handling them (on tour or flying) there is no way I would want them in anything besides a hard case.
