A former teacher of mine had a Mir. 186 that he played for nearly 30 years, through undergrad (Eastman), master's and doctorate; and through several professional orchestra positions. THAT'S longevity. I'd say he got his money's worth out of that horn.

As to the St. Pete, several local high schools have them, and the local repairmen don't mind too much. The finish either turns black very rapidly, or flakes, they will dent easily, the valves freeze if the horn sits while you're on vacation, the linkage isn't what I would call hardy, and it's fairly easy to overblow one.

Your money would be best spent on (in my order of preference) 1. - King 2341, 2. - Mir. S-191, 3. - Mir. S-186, 4. - VMI-2103.
