Often when notes are subsonic, their harmonics are still quite audible. There's a well-known psychoacoustic phenomenon where the brain perceives or fills in the fundamental when only the harmonics are audible. Experimenting with pure sine or square waves without harmonics can show the cutoff of audibility (more of a roll-off, actually).
