With my personal tubas, I like to keep it simple. I want to make sure there is a water key everywhere that I may need one on a gig, and that they work supremely well. I take the water key off the horn, and using swedging pliers, I fit the water key hinge tube to the hinge rod screw, just as I would for a woodwind key, and align the key cup with the water key nipple. Then, when installed, the water key seals just right, every time. I also like to put a cork on the other end of the water key, so it doesn't clunk against the slide crook when used.
Other than that, I just like to have the valves super-accurately lined up, and have the horn dent-free.
