I've found an interesting fix for sudden appearance of "funny notes" thats been discussed a bit in the past few days here. Several people mentioned spit valve leaks, if you are thinking of chasing the cause of a recently appearing "funny notes" problem, try this:

instead of replacing water key cork with cork, coat the outside and inside of the water key ferrule (the part the water drains out of) with a thin coat of vaseline, then after cleaning out the old cork from the key, use a decent-sized dollop of clear RTV in the key, and carefully without re-opening allow the key to close - the goal is to get the rtv into the ferrule so that once it is cured thoroughly, you can trim the "plug" to exactly the depth of the ferrule, this will smooth the flow across the water key. Let it cure for at least a day, then trim. If you follow the reasoning of this, try it! If you cannot follow the reasoning of this without questions, then mention it to your local qualified repair person to do for you!
