One thing that's made short work of the first layers of grime on old horns for me is using a bathroom "no scrub" cleaner (I use Scrub-Free One, because that's what I seem to have, but I imagine that the "Scrubbing Bubbles" stuff will work equally as well). Cuts the grease, tarnish, etc. and leaves you with a relatively clean horn ready for polishing.
Also great for getting lime deposits out of the inside of the horn. Rinse well.
