The tuba/string bass player on the Original "Stan Frieberg's USA" was Red Callender. Red was a fine musician and did
one of the first solo Jazz Tuba records, "Speak Low". I had the good fortune to play tuba/string bass on Volume II about
5 years ago. Billy May was 80 at the time. He learned to write back in the 30's when the standard double was tuba and
string bass--and he almost always wrote for that double. He was later on the Glenn Miller Band and one of the all time
great film composers and arrangers in Hollywood. These are both outrageous comedy albums and the music is meant to be
funny, over the top, show biz stuff. On the Vol 2 that I did, the tuba is almost too hot in the mix (on purpose).
It is available from Rhino Records.
