I've seen horns like this sell in the $2000-$2300 range, with considerable variability, on ebay. That's pretty similar to the 900 pounds Andy mentioned.

The older Imperials in good shape seem to fetch $1200-1500, and barely used Sovereigns in perfect condition seem to get a little less than $3000.

Don't worry too much about getting a great deal. If you get a great horn, you won't worry about paying an extra hundred or two, especially when you've played it so long it has become part of you, and you'll never sell it to realize the loss in any case. Buy it for a price that maintains the friendship, which is high enough so that he won't later resent it and low enough so that you won't later resent it.
