Orchestral recordings from the acoustic era are fun to listen to because the tuba plays parts that would later be covered by string bass after the advent of electrical recordings. It would have been a blast (sorry for the pun) to play these gigs on a big bell-front tuba!

For that matter, Paul Whiteman charts had some cool tuba parts. For example, imagine playing the tuba part for the ORIGINAL instrumentation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue that Ferde Grofe wrote for the Paul Whiteman band (before his subsequent arrangement for symphony orchestra), with Gershwin himself at the piano! In fact, someone on this list may, indeed, have recorded this arrangement with Gunther Schuller or some other restorer of original performances.
