Gotta get in on this one. The designation 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 is some marketing tool to help some salesman describe their product. If you look at desigantions and compare cross-product. Some of the designations make no sense. For example: The Rudy Meinl RM1C50 Is a HUGE tuba with a .835 bore. This instrument is designated 5/4. The York copies are LARGE tubas with a .750 bore. These are designated 6/4. The Rudy Meinl 3/4 is about the same size as a Mirafone 186 (4/4) while the 185 (3/4) is quite a bit smaller than the above mentioned Rudy (3/4). The Mirafone 185 is quite a bit larger than the small piston tubas, marketed as 3/4 tubas (.670-.690 bore), which is a lot smaller than the 1/2 sized Mirafone 184 and Rudy Meinl RM1 B/C 39 (.715 bore). Please don't be confused by (or sold on) a tuba because of its size. Play the instrument and see if it suits your needs before deciding ahead of time you nees a particular-sized tuba.
