It's the High School Disease, of which I was a major victim at that age, so I'm personally familiar with it.

Here are the symptoms:

Higher = better.
Faster = better.
Louder = better.

It's an experience issue, mostly. They haven't yet learned that sometimes you have to play something slower to make it sound faster (because it sounds more effortless), and Miles Davis didn't get famous playing high (nor Maynard Ferguson, either, though he did so frequently), and loud only sounds loud when most of everything else is soft.

I like the sound of the Bourree at about 80 beats/min or even a bit slower, and I also like to maintain a fairly strict tempo. If I start out too fast, the tempo drags. That is the Second-Rate Amateur Disease, which is my current main affliction.
