Harvey Phillips once told me that, until 1928, Eb tubas were used professionally almost as much as other, larger horns. But they were often built as High Pitch horns or convertable pitch horns and are quite out of tune with A=440. Since the surplus occurred
after 1928, these horns became relegated to school use for learning tubists. 1928 saw the beginning of the end of theater orchestras in the US with the release of "The Jazz Singer," a "talkie."
