I have a 1962 Reynolds sousa, a 1904 Conn sousa, a 1926 Conn upright, a 1915 Holton upright, a 1935 King bell front, and a home made helicon. Except for some intonation quirks, they all sound about the same to the listener's ear. They sound really different to me because of the bell direction. In my opinion, what makes the difference is the use of the different horns. I tend to take more care with intonation when I play an upright for ensemble work than I do when playing dixieland on the helicon or oom-pah stuff on the bell front horn. Consequently, I would not use the sousa or bell front for ensemble or chamber music. Just an opinion.
