I have played this music a number of times. F tuba is the best way to go. Having conducted the opera I can tell you that there is no tuba part in it. The Suite was written at the behest of Otto Klemperer. The tuba part is an amalgam of the cello, bass, and trombone part along with a smattering of the piano part. Everything was a vocal except for the Overture. Probably more info than you needed, but it may give you a little better perspective on the interpretation.
