The instrumentation of "Little Threepenny Music" corresponds to the caberet bands Weill knew in Berlin in the 1920's. The tuba players could have used helicons for all we know, but Weill wrote in very tight sophisticated voicing. I heard the Boston under Leinsdorf do this piece live in Carnegie Hall, 1969 or so. Chester played it on F. It was totally right. A few years later, I got to play it on one of my jobs, on my Alex F. Chester had set an example, both in instrument choice and musical approach that could hardly be improved upon. If a smaller tuba is unavailable to you, perhaps a shallower cup mouthpiece would help. Think light. Not necessarly "soft," but light and very focused.
