It would seem to me that the first front-action piston tubas appeared when piston Sousaphones, (raincatcher and otherwise) became popular. The piston sets and valve tubing are highly interchangeable between sousas and front action tubas. In addition, American players probably got used to the front action "feel" through the sousaphone and wanted it on their tubas, as well. I've always heard that Conn made the first Sousaphones so it's probably a good bet that they made the first front action tubas, as well. Somewhere there's probably an ad introducing these horns. Does anyone have an old catalogue that could substantiate this theory?
