Sorry to post a "me too" post, but I agree with ken k, Art, and Joe S. -- the oboe can be heard almost over every other instrument in the orchestra (it also helps greatly that it's almost always the ONLY oboe on stage... its sound won't get mushed with another oboe or three), and it's the least flexible instrument to tune (apart from the keyed percussion). One reason why oboists carry several reeds is to find the one that plays the most in tune on that day.

I'll also venture the idea that different tuba manufacturers design their instruments to "properly" tune at different slide lengths. Given the same player, different horns can easily have their slides at different positions and still be in tune.
