Tuba Mom,
My son Zach has been playing tuba for 3 years now, he has hopes of playig in the PennState Bule Band (His Goal), Zach had been playing a 3/4 Yamaha 103 (owned by the school) which he was allowed to keep at home. He was playing a full sized Tuba at school (6th grade) Zach also is in the Brass Ensamble at school and takes pirvate lessons, his tutor felt he was ready to move into a Full sized tuba.

My problem I felt is that Zach needed consistancy in what size tuba he was playing, the School would not be able to lend me a Full size Tuba to keep at home for a while. So I started looking for a used horn, watched E-bay etc.., spoke with several people, on and on, there are so many tubas out there. I had found a Cerveny in my price range $2100 - $300.00 and posted a question at the Yahoo Tubaand Eph group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TubaEuph, to which I received amny responses. Everyone on that list that responded were wonderful people, with a lot of advice. I also received an e-mail from Mike Russo from Brasswind a company in IN. (By the way nothing really negative was said about the Cerveny). He had suggested the VMI 2103 $2795.00 chech out
their web site http://www.woodwindbrasswind.com/productbrass.jsp?node=38924

Mike Russo is a great guy to talk to he will give you good advice :Mike Russo Tuba/Euphonium Specialist

Needless to say I ordered a VMI 2103 which is a 4 Valve Rotary for Zach. This may be too much Tuba for your son because he is new, and $3000 is a lot of money to pay If he isnt really interested in Playing the Tuba. Zach plays 20 -30 mins a day at home, plus what he does with the school and his tutor.

Good luck in your search, I just thank God there are wonderful people out there to give us Tuba Mom's advice, and listed to us.

Gail
