As others have posted, this is a common practice in orchestra auditions today. You are putting a deposit down on a time. This is a good faith gesture on your part that ensures you'll be responsible about attending the audition or notifying the orchestra if you can't attend. In either case, your deposit is cheerfully refunded. If you waste the committee's time by scheduling an audition and not showing up, they keep your deposit. It is no more than a way to keep auditions running smoothly and allowing the audition staff to accurately calculate how long to allocate to the given audition. Kind of like an upscale RSVP.
