I know your situation. I just started a new tuba player and he showed up with a horn that is unplayable. The purchase of a horn is a big investment. I would talk to the director and try to work with him/her. If schools want to develop a strong tuba section they should start with usable horns. The director can ask the H.S. director if they have an extra horn that your son can use, it will be to their adventage. I would not advise buying a horn unless your son is very excited about the tuba and is going to stick with it.
