Casey,

What you are experiencing may or may not be due to brushing. I find that for me, I play a lot better when I play about 5 min. worth of long tones, then take a 5-10 min. break, then come back and continue my warm-up with lip slurs, tongueing exercises, and so forth. The difference is noticable enough to me that the break has become a normal part of my routine. If you watch athletes, many do something similar in that they will stretch their muscles, then take a short break, and then warm up for real. This is also very effective if you have hit a wall during your practice routine. If you are working and working, but nothing seems to get better, lay the horn aside for 15 or 20 min. and then come back to it. The break can do wonders.
