Perhaps the best way to evaluate one's career is to determine what was the level of performance in their profession both when they started and when they ended their careers. Then comes the tricky part, how much of the rise in the profession was because of them.

In baseball, we can see how someone like Ruth, Gerig and Williams raised the performance level for future generations who studied their play. In the tuba world, there are those such as Helleberg and Bell who raised standards for future generations. There are exceptions such as Roberto Clemente and John Fletcher who's careers were tragically shortened while in their prime. Who knows the impact they would have had with full careers.

The best quote I have heard comparing music with baseball is "If you hit .400 in baseball, you are in the Hall of Fame, if you hit 99% of the notes in music, you might get fired."
