I always thought they were like a sax with holes in the sides,
but much much worse (at least the one in collegium was that way)

3) I would also like to know who is generally regarded
as the top ophicleide player of the 19th century. Are there
any web sites or other reference materials available?
As crazy as I remember playing that thing was in college,
surely it took fabulous musicians to make music with those things,
especially when you consider the things that are repertoir today
that were written for ophicleide.
