My only advice is to try to NOT pay much attention to the oft heard "open throat" concept. Trying to keep the throat "open" often only accomplishes actually closing it off, and that screws everything up. If anything, think about a REGULAR or COMFORTABLE throat. Just leave everything, including your larynx/Adams's apple, in the normal position.

On the other stuff, I would pay attention to what sounds the best and what is easiest to do. Instruction from others is easy to misinterpret, and it is very difficult for a teacher to be able to know for certain what is actually occurring inside your mouth when you are initiating and producing tones. Ultimately, you are your OWN teacher, and the person that you refer to as your teacher is actually your "educated guesser/advisor" sometimes, when it comes to matters such as what is occurring inside your mouth.

Summary: Avoid over-analyzing, if you can. :-)
