I am a Junior in High School, and I agree with both of you. I own and sometimes practice solos that are as hard or harder than the Penderecki with no intent of playing them in high school. Often I will have a solo worked out technically, and in my opinion musically, until one of my directors or my teacher hear me play it, at which point I feel kind of stupid, having missed a musical concept. This is not to say that I can't play musically, but that I am not experienced or educated enough to understand all of the concepts and theory behind the music. I think that a lot of people want to play hard music, just to say they can play it way to often. An eighth grader told me that he played the first movement of the Vaughn Williams once. At first I was amazed, but then I thought about it.
