Yes, bell-fronts sound a bit different to others, but it is my belief that bell fronts sound far more different to the PLAYERS than to the LISTENERS.

Conn sousas, lets face it, are 6/4, open-wrap, in tune better than most 6/4 CC's, and face the same direction as the trombones (towards those who are listening). I'm sure that a 5-valve or CC version of that instrument could have been developed, and that if we had grown up accustomed to them, they would have served us well. We are USED to having our sounds bounce around up in the stage lights and scenery ropes (or shell clouds) prior to wafting out into the hall, but it didn't necessarily have to be that way.
