A sousaphone is not a tuba, period. Can you imagine an orchestra with a big Conn 20K in the back? Pity the poor sole in the direct line of fire. I love my sousaphone, but only play it in the summer in parades, in my college alumni band (marching), or in those 4th of July fireworks concerts. This also applies to recording bell tubas. They are fine for small ensemble, or recording sessions, but wouldn't be ideal for concert work, either in a band or orchestra. The instrument has to fit the use. Remember that when Sousa commissioned the first sousaphones they were raincatchers because he wanted a sound that cascaded over the band and he wanted to avoid the directionality of a helicon. Bottom line is supply and demand and more playing situations call for tubas than sousaphones.
