In a book entitled "A Complete Guide to Brass" which is a method class book by Scott Whitener(of Rutgers, I beleive) there is a great picture of the Alex you talk about. It has a very short leadpipe going into the fifth valve(on top of the first). All the valve slides are to the left of the valves, which are indeed, reversed. An interesting looking horn. I don't have the capabilities to scan the picture into the sight, but you may want to mosey around a college book store to see if you can find this book. BTW, It is an excellent Brass Class Method Book for the education major.
