I would like to add that the facility that the st. pete's seem to be made in are quite behind in terms of technology. Every single valve set that comes out of the factory has some issues to be adressed and if they can't make good valve in the factory, how is everything else going to be up to par. Sure, you can hone the valves, but you can't just weld extra metal on to strenghthen a weak spot.
I am somewhat biased owning a VMI Culbertson 6/4 CC that I am very happy with, but I chose VMI, partly because they have been making high quality instruments for a number of years under several different names.
But, I still don't see why anyone considers the full size King 4pv w/detachable bell a good instrument, or the old Conn 5J (might be a bit small). Both of these sell for around $3K and if you pick a good one, it can serve you for many years to come.
