Speaking of Tommy Johnson and cimbassi, there is an excellent article (with lots of photos) in the current issue of Windplayer. The article is titled, "In the (film) Studio with L.A.'s Elite Recording Trombone Players". One photo shows Tommy Johnson in a sectional playing what is probably a
contrabass cimbasso (much of the instrument is hidden from view because of his music stand and orchestra light). As many of you know, Johnson is a monster tuba player. Gene Pokorny refers to "Bobo and Johnson" with great respect on his orchestral excerpts CD.

In the same photo, Bill Reichenbach is playing what appears to be an EE flat Boosey and Hawkes tuba.
Interestingly, his left hand is at the bottom of the main tuning slide-------almost like he is using the main to tune his notes on the fly. Any professional players out there ever hear of or use such a technique?
