Roger, I have known Sam for thirteen years as a student, friend and now partner. I remember him telling me in 1986 that "you will only play as well as you hear". Sam has amazing ears and at the most uses only changes for tunes. Sam is a fine jazz musician in every sense that implies. He has been performing jazz since he was a teenager. I think he is the best tuba player on the planet. He can simply do it all. Play any style of music, great soloist, teacher, arranger, producer, business man and above all a great musician. Sam is one of the most curious people I know.
