I agree with Sean's comments to record yourself and practice ALOT.

What kind of a mouthpiece are you using now? Different mouthpieces affect the sound of a horn significantly. For example, medium to shallow depth, rounded cup shaped mouthpieces (e.g. Bach 18, 'german' style mouthpieces) are often said to give a 'bright' sound and deep, funnel shaped cup mouthpieces (e.g. Helleberg style mouthpieces by Conn, Schilke and others or the deep cup cushion lip Bach 24AW) are said to give a 'dark' sound, all other things being equal. If you're using something like a Bach 18 (perhaps the single most common 'general purpose' mouthpiece), you might wnnt to try a deeper funnel-shaped cup mouthpiece of an appropriate size for your embouchure. If you're using a 24AW already (also a very common mouthpiece) try a Conn or Schilke Helleberg, if you can.
