Hi Jon,
I would probably be somewhat offended if someone referred to my tone as "stinky", and it's not an effective way to critique anyone's playing. You probably need to talk to him and ask him what "stinky" is. Thin I understand, stinky...(???) If you want to add a little more life to your tone, you don't want to restrict the airflow through your horn. Try playing as if you have an orange in your mouth and blow from your abdomen. You will get a bigger sound (not so thin). Don't be discouraged by his remarks and have fun. You may want to get some music that's fun for you to play rather than standard band stuff. Try scanning a few catalogs and looking for solos with tape accompaniment or small ensemble music where the tuba is relied upon more. It will improve your playing, and perhaps more important, your confidence in your ability to play. Take care.

Scott
