The thing you need to realize is the true importance of the lower range when playing the tuba. Many players believe that the high range is more impressive, however this is very untrue. Develop your low range with lip slurs or low etudes in various books written be Arnold Jacobs. Develop your low range first and the rest will fall into place. I do recomend working on your upper range by doing lip slurs using different combinations of fingerings(i.e.0,1,2,1-2,2-3...). This has helped increse my range and give a okay balance in sound. LOW RANGE with a good open, dark sound is most inportant.
