If Allan Hovhaness is not the greatest American composer ever, then he is certainly my favorite! From the spacings of the strings, the unique treatment of the woodwinds, to the use of exotic instuments; his use of color is carefully considered and primary to the evocative nature of his works.
An aluminum straight mute would be my choise, a different tonal color rather than ' a tuba, but softer'.

Someone should ask the composer, himself. He lives in Seattle, I think. Any tuba players in the great northwest?
