Communication and awareness of responsibilities are essential to pulling it off. A conductor might be needed in the early rehearsals, but you'll eventually be able to do without one.
Without seeing your music, I can't say anything specific like, "Because Tuba 2 has quarter notes in this ritard, he's the one to listen to for the tempo." For a general comment, I'd say to make a point of sitting so you can see each other. Practice the transitions A LOT, memorize them, because you can't afford to look down and miss the eye contact & instrument gestures that allow smooth ensemble playing.
BTW, how many is "a few more ritard and tempo adjustments than normal"? Forty? :)
