Are the valve guides free of blemishes & burrs? The plastic guide has an ability to allow slight nicks to adversely affect performance. If that's the problem, try smoothing the guides edges just a bit with a few touches from a nail file or emery board (VERY carefully, of course, to avoid scratching the piston).

Even with that problem, I much prefer an easy-to-replace plastic guide than a really-difficult-to-replace metal one anyway. That's a piece that's going to get ground down no matter what, and easy maintenance wins in my book.
