Standard operating procedure is to "invite" those with the experience and "advise" those without to not audition. If you wanna audition, then they will still listen. That is how a teenager is able to sometimes win a good gig. They just show up.
Also "standard" operating procedure is to automatically advance the "invited" people past the first round. In this first round the cattle call takes place. Everyone from the local Jr. High tuba player to Sumner Erichson play this first round. Generally only a very small number people may be advanced to round to with the big boys. The second round is usually where the audition really starts.
