I am both a vocalist and tuba player. My vocal instructor continuously calls for a method of breathing using the diaphragm for all support and not the throat or upper torso. She says that the shoulders and chest should not rise or fall when inhaling or exhaling, respectively, but that the chest cavity should expand from diaphragm support. Is this the same type of support you are referring too? I know when I first learned how to sing like this it was an epiphany for me.
