I had the pleasure of meeting John Fletcher in 1980 when the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble toured the US that year. He, as well as several other members of the group, were extremely friendly to us - a bunch of student brass players from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was amazed that one of our party drove from Bristol to Williamsburg just to hear them - a three hundred plus mile drive. Speaking with him was quite unforgettable and hearing of his untimely death several years later saddened me. He was a true gem among musicians and men.
