In the "for what it's worth" category -
I heard the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in 1991, in a performance of the Bruckner 4th with Claudio Abbado. It was a great concert, the orchestra played with a terrific, characteristic and unified sound. At that concert, Ron was playing a Hirsbrunner HB-2P CC tuba. I met Ron that day, he was great, very gracious and a gentleman. I asked about his instrument, as I had an expectation that he would have been playing an F (or possibly a BBb) on the Bruckner. I don't remember Ron's exact words - it seemed to me that instrument type was his choice.

In a bit of 'Net searching, I came across another interesting article, along the lines of some of John's observations.

I repeat, "for what it's worth"
